Moving off BuddyBoss?

All the community.
None of the plugin hell.

You built on WordPress and BuddyBoss to own your community. Somewhere along the way you became a part-time sysadmin — patching plugins, chasing slow pages, and bracing for the update that breaks everything. TribeCrafter is the managed, all-in-one home for your community. And we’ll move you over for free.

10+ years building on WordPress Patched BuddyBoss’s core to fix client bugs Two-time web performance contest winner
Sound familiar?

Self-hosted was supposed to mean freedom, not maintenance

If your week looks like this, you’re not doing it wrong. This is just what running a community on WordPress feels like.

We know, because we lived it. We ran this exact stack for years, got tired of fighting it, and built TribeCrafter so you don’t have to.

Plugin roulette

A dozen plugins from a dozen vendors, and every update is a gamble on what breaks next.

Slow — unless you pay to fix it

Running a social network on WordPress is resource-heavy. You end up on premium hosting with caching bolted on, and it still crawls under real load.

The update treadmill

WordPress, the theme, and every plugin need constant updating — and the updates are often what break your features.

Security is on you

A public community is a real attack surface, and keeping every plugin, theme, and core update patched is your job, not someone else’s.

Buggy, and support that can’t always help

When something breaks across several plugins at once, no single vendor owns the problem — and answers come slowly.

You became the IT department

Backups, PHP versions, compatibility, uptime. None of it is why you started a community.

WordPress was never built to be a community platform

WordPress is a brilliant blogging and content system. But a community is a different animal — real-time feeds, members, messaging, courses, and payments, all running under constant load.

BuddyBoss does an impressive job bending WordPress into that shape — it’s a fork of BuddyPress, itself a fork of bbPress — but you feel the seams every day, in how slow it runs and how often it breaks. TribeCrafter was built to be a community platform from the first line of code, so there are no seams to feel.

A note from the founder

I’ve worked with WordPress for over a decade. I only ran a couple of BuddyBoss communities myself, but I spent plenty of time in their code and their community — and that was enough.

Their own official community told me most of what I needed to know. It was full of people hitting the same walls I was: broken updates, buggy features, slow pages, and support that couldn’t go deep when it mattered. I patched BuddyBoss’s own code a couple of times to get a client out of an urgent jam, and shared the fixes back there.

The speed was the part I couldn’t fix. I’ve won two web performance optimization contests, and even on a dedicated, high-spec server I couldn’t make a BuddyBoss site feel fast. At some point you stop blaming the hosting. WordPress was never built to run a live community.

So I built the platform I wanted back then: fast because it was designed to be, managed so you’re not the sysadmin, and yours — your own data and 0% platform fees. If you’re moving off BuddyBoss, I’ll help you make the switch myself.

The real math

Add up what BuddyBoss actually costs you

“Self-hosted” feels free until you total it up.

  • The BuddyBoss theme & Platform Pro license, renewed every year (it starts around $299/year).
  • A separate mobile app if you want one — BuddyBoss charges $99/month for it (about $1,200/year).
  • The third-party plugins you still buy — an LMS like LearnDash for courses, plus memberships and forms — each with its own license, renewal, and support desk.
  • Premium hosting powerful enough to run it smoothly, plus the caching add-ons to make that happen.
  • A developer on call for when something breaks.
  • The hours every week that come out of your own time.
TribeCrafter
One predictable subscription. From one company.

Between licenses and renewals from different vendors, even the billing gets complicated. For most serious communities the total runs well past a thousand dollars a year — before you count the time. TribeCrafter is one plan, with nothing to assemble and nothing to maintain.

BuddyBoss details reflect its publicly listed product and pricing and its acquisition by Awesome Motive / WPBeginner Growth Fund in July 2024. Comparisons are our own.

Simpler to run. Yours to keep.

One managed platform, no plugins

Feed, groups, courses, events, blog, member profiles, and direct messaging are built in and work together. Nothing to install, nothing to keep compatible.

A full course platform, built in

Sections, lessons, video, progress tracking, and completion certificates come with TribeCrafter. No separate LMS plugin, no LearnDash license.

Fast and stable by default

Because it’s one product, there are no plugins to conflict and no update that breaks your site.

Keep 100% of what you earn

Sell access and get paid directly to your bank account. We take 0% — only Stripe’s standard processing fee applies.

Your own data

Every community runs on its own separate database, storage, and search — not pooled in with everyone else.

Your brand, your domain

Custom domain, logo, and colors, with no code.

The scary part, made easy

Switching doesn’t mean starting over

Leaving a platform is the part that stops most people. We make it the easy part — and we do the heavy lifting with you.

1

We import your members and profiles

Straight from your WordPress and BuddyBoss site, done for you as part of onboarding.

2

We set up your courses, groups, and content with you

Hands-on, so nothing gets lost in the move. No solo data entry.

3

A founder walks you through it

Start to finish. You’re not handed a wizard and left alone.

Fair question

New — and built the way you’d want

We lived it, then built the fix

A decade on WordPress, our hands in BuddyBoss’s own codebase fixing client bugs, and two web performance contests won trying to make it fast. We built the alternative because tuning was never enough.

Independent, no investor pressure

BuddyBoss was acquired in 2024 by the WPBeginner Growth Fund (Awesome Motive), and its original founders have moved on. TribeCrafter is bootstrapped, with no outside investors — so our roadmap answers to the communities on the platform, not a portfolio owner.

Your setup is isolated and yours

Your own database, storage, and search. Your community isn’t tangled up with anyone else’s the way it is on a shared SaaS.

Founding pricing, locked in

Move over now and keep founding pricing for good.

You’re getting in at the right time

Switching to TribeCrafter isn’t settling for less — it’s getting ahead of where communities are going.

Everything you need, already live

Feed, groups, courses, events, blog, profiles, direct messaging, and payments all run today — and the platform gets better every week, shaped by the communities already building on it.

Your stack keeps shrinking

Built-in gamification and a built-in CRM are on the way, so even more of the tools you pay for separately collapse into one platform. Founding members help decide what ships next.

Founding pricing, locked in

Come over early and keep founding pricing for good, with a direct line to the team. The earlier you join, the better your deal — and the more say you have in the roadmap.

Moving from BuddyBoss, answered

Can you import my members?

Yes. We import your members and their profiles from WordPress and BuddyBoss for you, as part of onboarding.

What about my courses and content?

We set those up with you, hands-on, so your courses, groups, and posts land in the right place. No solo data entry.

Do I keep my data?

Yes. Your community runs on its own separate database and storage, and it stays yours.

What is your cut of my revenue?

Zero. You sell access and get paid directly to your bank account, and you keep everything you earn. Only Stripe’s standard processing fee applies.

Is there a mobile app?

Your community works well in any mobile browser today, and a native app is coming (not available yet).

How much does it cost?

One predictable subscription, with founding pricing if you move over early — from $49/month, 0% platform fees. See the pricing page, or ask on a migration call.

What if I get stuck?

A founder helps you through the move and stays reachable after. You’re not on your own.

Leave the maintenance behind

Bring your community somewhere simpler to run, and truly yours. We’ll move you over for free.
